Legal agreements governing the use of PracticeSession and Lamina
Terms of Service
Last Updated: March 2026
Welcome to PracticeSession and Lamina. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the PracticeSession and Lamina software applications (collectively, the "Software", "Apps", or "Service"). By installing, accessing, or using either application, you agree to be bound by these Terms.
PracticeSession is a music practice toolkit available as a paid license. Lamina is a free standalone stem splitter by the same team. Both apps share a common infrastructure for cloud stem separation credits.
1. Agreement to Terms
By using PracticeSession or Lamina, you agree to these Terms, our Privacy Policy, and our Refund Policy. If you do not agree to these Terms, do not install or use the Software.
2. License Grant
Subject to your compliance with these Terms and payment of applicable fees, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use the Software for your personal or commercial use.
2.1 PracticeSession License
One-Time Purchase: You purchase a license to use PracticeSession software.
Version Coverage: Your license grants you access to PracticeSession v1.x and all updates within the same major version (e.g., 1.0, 1.1, 1.2). Major version upgrades (e.g., v2.0) may require an additional purchase, though upgrade discounts may be offered to existing customers.
Device Limit: Each license may be activated on up to three (3) devices. You may deactivate a device to free up an activation slot.
Permitted Use: You may use PracticeSession for personal practice, professional music work, teaching, studio recording, and commercial purposes.
2.2 Lamina License
Free Software: Lamina is free to use with email registration. No license key or payment is required.
Registration: You must register with a valid email address to use Lamina. Registration is tied to your device hardware ID.
Permitted Use: Same as PracticeSession: personal, professional, teaching, studio, and commercial use.
2.3 License Restrictions
You may NOT:
Copy, distribute, resell, lease, rent, lend, or sublicense the Software
Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or attempt to derive the source code of the Software (except where prohibited by law)
Remove, alter, or obscure any proprietary notices (copyright, trademark, etc.) on the Software
Use the Software to develop competing software products
Share your license key with others or use a single license on more than three (3) devices simultaneously
Circumvent or attempt to circumvent any license validation, activation, or copy protection mechanisms
3. Trial Period
PracticeSession offers a 14-day free trial with full access to all features. No credit card is required to start your trial. The trial is tied to your device hardware ID to prevent abuse. After the trial period expires, you must purchase a license to continue using PracticeSession.
Lamina does not have a trial period. It is free to use indefinitely with email registration.
4. Payment and Billing
Payment processing depends on where you purchase PracticeSession:
Direct purchases (practicesession.app): Handled by Paddle.com Market Limited ("Paddle"), our authorized payment processor and Merchant of Record. By purchasing through Paddle, you agree to Paddle's terms and conditions. Paddle is responsible for processing payments, handling VAT/sales tax collection and remittance, issuing invoices and receipts, and managing payment-related customer data.
Mac App Store purchases: Handled by Apple. All payment processing, billing, and receipts are managed by Apple in accordance with Apple's terms and conditions. We receive a transaction confirmation from Apple but never access your payment information.
All prices are listed in USD unless otherwise stated. Applicable taxes will be calculated and added at checkout based on your location and purchase channel.
4.1 Cloud Stem Separation Credits
Both PracticeSession and Lamina offer optional cloud-based AI stem separation. This feature requires purchasing credit packs:
Credit Packs: Available in various sizes (e.g., 20, 60, or 150 minutes). Credits are measured in minutes of audio processing.
Credits Never Expire: Purchased credits remain in your account indefinitely with no expiration date.
Shared Across Apps: Credits are tied to your email address and can be used in both PracticeSession and Lamina.
Stem Multiplier: The credit cost depends on the number of stems requested. A 2-stem separation costs 1× the audio duration; a 4-stem separation costs 4×; a 6-stem separation costs 5×. The exact credit cost is displayed before you confirm each separation.
Selection-Based Billing: When you separate only a selected section of a song (rather than the full track), you are billed only for the duration of that selection.
Failed Separations: If a cloud separation fails during processing, the credits are automatically refunded to your account.
No Subscription: Credits are one-time purchases. There are no recurring charges or auto-renewal.
4.2 Cloud Processing and Audio Upload
When you use cloud stem separation, the audio file (or selected portion) is temporarily uploaded to a third-party AI processing service. By using cloud separation, you acknowledge and agree that:
Your audio data is transmitted over the internet to a third-party service provider for processing
The audio is processed on the provider's servers and the resulting stems are returned to your device
We select cloud separation providers based on quality and reliability; the specific provider may change over time
You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to process any audio you upload (see Section 7.2)
Cloud separation is entirely optional. Both apps include free local separation that processes audio entirely on your device with no data transmitted.
5. Refund Policy
Due to the nature of digital software and our 14-day free trial period, all license sales are final. We do not offer refunds on license purchases after purchase. Cloud separation credits are also non-refundable once purchased (failed separations are automatically refunded in credits, not cash). We strongly encourage you to fully evaluate PracticeSession during the free trial period before purchasing. For complete details, please see our Refund Policy.
6. User Responsibilities
6.1 Age Requirements
You must be at least 13 years old to use PracticeSession. If you are under 18 years of age, you must have permission from a parent or legal guardian to purchase a license.
6.2 Account Security
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your license key (PracticeSession) and your registered email address (both apps). Do not share your license key publicly or with unauthorized parties. You are responsible for all activities that occur under your license and account, including cloud separation credit usage.
6.3 Prohibited Uses
You agree not to use PracticeSession to:
Engage in any unlawful or fraudulent activity
Violate any applicable laws or regulations
Infringe upon the intellectual property rights of others
Transmit any viruses, malware, or harmful code
Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems or other users' accounts
7. Intellectual Property
7.1 Our Intellectual Property
PracticeSession and all related software, code, algorithms, designs, trademarks, logos, and documentation are owned by Practice Session and protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. Your license does not grant you any ownership rights to the Software.
7.2 Your Content
You retain all rights to audio files and content you create, import, or process using the Software. We do not claim any ownership or rights over your audio files, practice sessions, or exported content.
Local processing: All audio processing (playback, time-stretching, pitch-shifting, EQ, local stem separation) occurs on your device. We do not collect, store, or access your audio files for these operations.
Cloud stem separation: When you choose to use cloud separation, the audio (or selected portion) is temporarily uploaded to a third-party processing service. The audio is used solely to perform the requested separation and is not retained by us or the provider after processing is complete. You are responsible for ensuring you have the necessary rights to process any audio you upload for cloud separation.
7.3 Third-Party Components
PracticeSession includes third-party open-source components licensed under separate terms (including LGPL-2.1, MIT, and BSD licenses). For complete details, see our Open Source Licenses page.
8. Privacy and Data Collection
We take your privacy seriously. We collect minimal data necessary to provide the Service:
Device hardware ID (for license activation, trial management, and account association)
License activation records (to enforce device limits)
Credit transaction records (credit purchases, usage, and refunds)
We do NOT collect:
Your audio files or practice session data (audio uploaded for cloud separation is processed by a third-party service and not stored by us; see Section 4.2)
Usage analytics or telemetry (unless you opt-in in the future)
We may release updates, bug fixes, and new features for PracticeSession. Minor and patch updates (e.g., v1.1, v1.0.1) are provided free of charge to licensed users. Major version upgrades (e.g., v2.0) may be offered at an additional cost, with discounts for existing customers.
9.2 Support
We provide email support to licensed users at support@practicesession.app. While we strive to respond promptly, we do not guarantee specific response times or availability.
10. Disclaimer of Warranties
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT:

The Software will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free
The results obtained from using the Software will be accurate or reliable
Any errors in the Software will be corrected
You acknowledge that audio processing is complex and may vary based on your hardware, operating system, and source audio files. We make no guarantees about audio quality or processing results.
11. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL PRACTICESTUDIO, ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, OR LICENSORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, USE, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, RESULTING FROM:
Your use or inability to use the Software
Any unauthorized access to or use of our servers and/or any personal information stored therein
Any interruption or cessation of transmission to or from the Software
Any bugs, viruses, or other harmful code transmitted through the Software
Any errors or omissions in any content or for any loss or damage incurred as a result of the use of any content posted, emailed, transmitted, or otherwise made available through the Software
IN NO EVENT SHALL OUR TOTAL LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL DAMAGES, LOSSES, AND CAUSES OF ACTION EXCEED THE TOTAL AMOUNT YOU HAVE PAID TO US IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM (INCLUDING LICENSE FEES AND CREDIT PURCHASES).
12. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Practice Session and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or relating to:
Your use or misuse of the Software
Your violation of these Terms
Your violation of any rights of another party, including intellectual property rights
Any content you create or process using the Software
13. Termination
13.1 Termination by You
You may stop using PracticeSession at any time by uninstalling the Software from your devices. Termination does not entitle you to a refund.
13.2 Termination by Us
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your license at any time, with or without notice, if:
You violate these Terms
You engage in fraudulent activity or license abuse
We discontinue the Software (with reasonable notice)
13.3 Effect of Termination
Upon termination, you must cease all use of the Software and uninstall it from all devices. Sections of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including intellectual property provisions, disclaimers, and limitations of liability) will continue to apply.
14. Modifications to Terms
We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email (if provided) or through the Software. Continued use of the Software after changes become effective constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.
15. Governing Law and Jurisdiction
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Quebec and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict of law principles. Both parties agree to submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Montreal, Quebec, for the resolution of any disputes.
16. Export Compliance
You agree to comply with all applicable export and import laws and regulations. You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a Canadian or U.S. government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on any government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
17. Entire Agreement
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Refund Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and Practice Session regarding the Software and supersede all prior agreements and understandings.
18. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect. The invalid provision will be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid and enforceable.
19. Waiver
No waiver of any term of these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or any other term. Our failure to assert any right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
20. Contact Information
For questions about these Terms of Service, please contact us at:

1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
Email Address: Collected when you purchase a PracticeSession license through Paddle, register for Lamina, purchase cloud separation credits, or opt-in to receive product updates. We are committed to your privacy. We do NOT collect or store:
Your audio files or practice session data. Audio uploaded for cloud stem separation is transmitted directly to a third-party processing service and is not stored on our servers (see Section 4.1).
Usage analytics, telemetry, or behavior tracking data
Payment information (handled exclusively by Paddle)
Location data beyond what is required for tax purposes by Paddle
Cookies or browser tracking data (our website may use basic analytics, but the desktop apps do not)
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:

Customer Support: To respond to your inquiries and provide technical assistance.
Product Updates: To send important software updates, security patches, and feature announcements (if you opt-in).
Legal Compliance: To comply with applicable laws, regulations, and legal processes.
3. Data Storage and Security
3.1 Where Data is Stored
License and Credits Server: Hosted on Railway.app infrastructure. Stores license keys, device IDs, email addresses, activation records, and credit transaction records in a secure PostgreSQL database.
Local Storage: Your audio files, practice sessions, regions, stems from local separation, and settings are stored on your local device. We do not upload or access this data.
Cloud Separation (temporary): When you use cloud stem separation, audio is temporarily transmitted to a third-party AI processing service for the duration of the separation. Audio is not stored on our servers. The third-party provider processes the audio and returns the resulting stems; we do not control the provider's data retention policies but select providers that do not retain customer audio after processing.
3.2 Security Measures
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data:
Encrypted HTTPS connections for all server communications
Secure database hosting with Railway.app's enterprise-grade infrastructure
Access controls and authentication for server access
Regular security updates and monitoring
However, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
4. Data Sharing and Third Parties
4.1 Third-Party Service Providers
We work with the following third-party services:

We select providers based on separation quality and reliability; the specific provider may change over time
Audio is used solely for the purpose of performing the requested separation
We select providers that do not retain customer audio after processing is complete
4.2 We Do NOT Sell Your Data
We will never sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.

Your continued use of PracticeSession after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
12. Contact Us
If you have questions, concerns, or requests regarding this Privacy Policy or our data practices, please contact us at:
This Refund Policy describes our policy regarding refunds for PracticeSession license purchases and cloud stem separation credit purchases.
1. License Purchases: No Refunds After Trial Period
Due to the nature of digital software and our generous 14-day free trial period with full feature access, all PracticeSession license sales are final. We do not offer refunds after a license has been purchased.
Try Before You Buy: We strongly encourage all users to fully evaluate PracticeSession during the 14-day free trial period before making a purchase. The trial provides complete access to all features with no credit card required, allowing you to thoroughly test the software's compatibility with your system and workflow.
1b. Cloud Separation Credits: Non-Refundable
Credit pack purchases are non-refundable. Since credits never expire, there is no time pressure to use them. However:
Failed separations: If a cloud separation fails during processing, the credits are automatically refunded to your account balance. This is a credit refund, not a cash refund.
Both apps offer free local separation that you can try before purchasing cloud credits, so you can verify that stem separation works with your audio before spending credits on the cloud option.
Trial expiry: If you purchase credits during a PracticeSession trial and the trial expires before you use all your credits, the credits remain in your account. They can be used in Lamina (free) or in PracticeSession if you later purchase a license. Credits are not refundable in this scenario.
2. Why We Have This Policy
PracticeSession is a digital product that is delivered immediately upon purchase. Once you receive your license key and activate the software, you have access to the full product. Unlike physical goods, digital software cannot be "returned" in a traditional sense.
Our 14-day trial period is designed to give you ample time to:
Test all features and functionality
Verify compatibility with your operating system and hardware
Evaluate audio quality and performance with your audio files
Assess whether PracticeSession meets your practice and teaching needs
Experience the complete workflow before committing to a purchase
3. Exceptions
We may consider refunds on a case-by-case basis in the following exceptional circumstances:
3.1 Technical Issues
If you experience a critical technical issue that makes PracticeSession completely unusable and:
The issue was not present during the trial period (e.g., caused by a recent update)
You have worked with our support team at support@practicesession.app to attempt to resolve the issue
The issue cannot be resolved within a reasonable timeframe
You request a refund within 14 days of purchase
We may, at our sole discretion, offer a refund or alternative compensation.
3.2 Duplicate Purchases
If you accidentally purchase multiple licenses for the same product, contact us at support@practicesession.app within 14 days and we will refund the duplicate purchase(s).
3.3 Fraudulent Purchases
If your payment method was used without your authorization, please contact both Paddle (our payment processor) and us immediately. We will work with you and Paddle to resolve the issue.
4. Refund Request Process
If you believe you qualify for a refund under the exceptions listed above, please contact us at support@practicesession.app within 14 days of purchase with:
Your license key or order number
Email address used for purchase
Detailed description of the issue (for technical issues)
Steps you have already taken to resolve the issue (for technical issues)
We will review your request and respond within 5 business days. Refund decisions are made at our sole discretion.
5. Refund Processing
If a refund is approved:
Refunds are processed through Paddle, our payment processor
Refunds are issued to the original payment method
Processing time depends on your payment provider (typically 5-10 business days)
Your license will be deactivated and you must cease using PracticeSession
You must uninstall the software from all devices
6. Non-Refundable Scenarios
Refunds will NOT be granted in the following situations:
Change of Mind: You decided you no longer need or want the software
Lack of Use: You purchased the software or credits but did not use them
Compatibility: The software does not work with your system configuration (this should be verified during the trial)
Feature Expectations: The software does not have a specific feature you expected (all features are documented and available during the trial)
Difficulty of Use: You find the software too difficult to use or learn
After 14 Days: More than 14 days have passed since your license purchase (except for ongoing unresolved technical issues)
Separation Quality: You are unsatisfied with the quality of stem separation results (quality varies by song and source material; free local separation is available to test before purchasing cloud credits)
Unused Credits: You have unused cloud separation credits remaining in your account (credits never expire)
Violation of Terms: Your license was terminated due to violation of our Terms of Service
7. Chargebacks
If you initiate a chargeback or payment dispute with your bank or payment provider without first contacting us:
Your license will be immediately deactivated
You will lose access to PracticeSession
Your account may be permanently banned from purchasing future licenses
We may provide evidence to the payment processor demonstrating that the purchase was legitimate and the product was delivered
Please contact us at support@practicesession.app to resolve any billing issues before initiating a chargeback.
8. Major Version Upgrades
This refund policy applies to your initial PracticeSession purchase. If we release a major version upgrade (e.g., PracticeSession 2.0) that requires an additional purchase:
You may continue using your current version indefinitely
Upgrade purchases are subject to this same refund policy
Trial or discounted upgrade periods may be offered to existing customers
9. Partial Refunds
We do not offer partial refunds or pro-rated refunds for:
Periods of non-use
Device deactivations
Partially used credit packs
Switching to a different music practice software
Since PracticeSession is a one-time purchase (not a subscription), there are no recurring charges or billing periods to pro-rate. Credits never expire and can be used at any time.
10. Contact Information
For refund requests or questions about this Refund Policy, please contact:
Payment Processor (Paddle):
For billing inquiries related to your payment method, you may also contact Paddle at https://www.paddle.com/support
11. Changes to This Refund Policy
We reserve the right to modify this Refund Policy at any time. Changes will be effective immediately upon posting the updated policy on our website with a new "Last Updated" date. Your purchase is governed by the Refund Policy in effect at the time of purchase.
